Flashback Friday: Welcome to Jamrock 2011

Sometimes it’s nice to dress the theme of the party where you’re going. As a Surinamese girl I love listening to dancehall & reggae and I visit the nr 1 party in that category in the Netherlands: Jamrock. In 2011 there was a ladies theme so I decided to dress up for this event and paint my nails with the Jamaican Flag. Welcome to Jamrock! … Continue reading Flashback Friday: Welcome to Jamrock 2011

Monday Inspiration: Never stop looking

A very beautiful quote that might take some time to understand, but for the dreamers and go-getters among us it is pretty obvious. I got this quote from the movie The Magic of Belle Isle from the character Monte Wildhorn played by Morgan Freeman. Quote of the week: Never stop looking for what’s not there.   Have a wonderful week!   Continue reading Monday Inspiration: Never stop looking

Fashion and romance in Dutch film ‘Hartenstraat’

Hartenstraat header

Besides fashion and good food I really love movies. I guess you can say that when it comes to movies I am a big Hollywood fan. But from time to time I can watch a Dutch movie if the storyline sounds good. So I did yesterday. Since I had to be in Amsterdam city centre for a meeting, I thought why not take this opportunity to go see a movie at the Pathé cinema in the city centre, giving the fact that I almost always go to the cinema in Amsterdam Southeast. I Love SU fashion line at Dresscode in Paramaribo

IMG-20140205-02198

The I love.. shirts are a fashion phenomenon and nowadays has become an integral part of casual street wear around the world. Most of you know the many I <3.. shirts of different cities like A’DAM, Berlin, London, Paris, Milan, Roma, Barcelona, Stockholm, NY, LA, Miami, Montreal, Tokyo and so on. In Suriname, where I’m from, there is the I Love SU fashion line and merchandise. While I’m not here to explain to you the history and demographics of Suriname, I can tell you that the population is not even close to one million citizens. Most people live in the capital city Paramaribo, and when there is talk about life in Suriname or going to Suriname it usually is about Paramaribo, but in general people speak of Su (short for Suriname). It is not like, for example, the United States or Spain (because of the big cities), that there is a I Love.. clothing line for almost every city. No, in small populated Suriname, like I said, they speak of Su. That is basically the history behind the choice of the name I Love SU. A touch of African Queen on Kingsday

IMG-20140426-04160

On Saturday April 26, as you can read in my previous post “Open Air Boutique on Kingsday”, it was the first Kingsday in the Netherlands. I also shared with you that I participated on the free market with my cousins by presenting our own Open Air Boutique. After a fun day of releasing my inner sales person, I went to Amsterdam city with my best friend. Since it was Kingsday I wanted to dress appropriately, with a royal touch, and so I did. With my natural curly hair it is always a bit of a task to get a proper hairdo, and I didn’t feel like taking on this task that day. Instead of spending half an hour getting my hair done, I choose to go African chic with one of the trending items of today, the headscarf.  Continue reading “A touch of African Queen on Kingsday”

But first let me take a selfie

IMG-20140124-00912

A bunch of crazy silly selfies, made in Suriname this year in January. It was my first real night of clubbing! I needed a nice dress to go with my curlies and pink lipstick. That same day I went shopping at Maretraite Mall and came back home with a peplum one I got at Dojo Couture. It was my first, and yet only, peplum dress. Paramaribo a Fashion City

IMG-20140122-00792

In January this year, due to family circumstances, I went to Suriname. After one emotional week it was also time to enjoy the country and the big city: Paramaribo. As always I look for inspiration wherever I go. Last summer I was there also and I came back very inspired. This year I went out again to see what Paramaribo has to offer when it comes to fashion. If you think that Paramaribo is not a fashion city think again! Surinamese people love fashion and always try their best to look their best, and dress up to the fullest when they go out. In his post I like to share Paramaribo from a fashion point of view. Continue reading “Paramaribo a Fashion City”

Open Air Boutique on Kingsday

IMG-20140426-04137

Last year on this date, April 30, it was the last Queensday in the Netherlands. On this day, April 30 2013, the crown prince Willem Alexander was crowned King of the Netherlands, meaning the national holiday Queensday is now Kingsday. The difference is that the date April 30 we were all used to for decades is now changed to April 26. This is because April 30 was the birthday of the late former Queen Juliana, and also the date her daughter, crown princess Beatrix at that time and now former Queen Beatrix, was crowned Queen of the Netherlands. Queen Beatrix kept the tradition of the national holiday Queensday on April 30. But since King Willem Alexander is crowned, this holiday is changed to April 26, given the fact that this is his birthday, even if he was crowned on April 30 also. So last Saturday April 26 we had our first Kingsday. Continue reading “Open Air Boutique on Kingsday”
